    Going back home

    Hi,

As we already decided to go back this Christmas, I am getting more and more excited. I am not having too much to do today and hopefully I could memorize a lot of words. I still keep my good grades. We are learning the Death Penalty in Rel Study by reading a book called 《Dead men walking》 by a nun who had been for the penalty and finally became to against. Derivative is the topic all through this semester for Calculus. Now we are in the World War I period for Amer His and have just learned about the presidency including Cleveland, McKinley, T.Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson. We just covered mechanics for physics and are in Thermodynamics . We are learning JavaScript which will also be the topic for the entire year in Programming. Hamlet is for Brit Lit and Act 4 is where we are now.  We are right at the scene when Gertrude tells King and Laertes that Ophelia drowned. I was very sad when reading this part and so was everyone else in the class. It was a dreadful silence. Now we are changing stems for Spanish which is really hard (e - ie ; o - ue ; e - i). I just took 2 quiz from Brit lit and Math today, and am going to have another one in Amer His tomorrow. Good luck.

    More about the egg containers

    Hi,

We made a box with a spring on the bottom. We also made a lid to increase the air resistance and wings to make it balance. I was thinking of making a bigger parachute in order to get more air resistance and adding some weight to the box to prevent it from tipping over, but we did not accomplish any of both. Everybody was thinking that everything would fall at a same acceleration at 9.8m/s2 which is absolutely right. However, there is air resistance which need to be taken into consideration. Since the paper has little mass, the air resistance plays an important role of reducing its accleration. We used a spring at the bottom which did do a lot to reduce the collision. But we didn't make the most useful part of incresing the area exposed to the air. How we made the container was very exciting. We made a box first and then we made lots of small springs by folding the papar. We had enough tapes and cards for the construction but as I was thinking of the weight, our ggroup got disagreement with the usage of cards. I persisted that we would need at least 20 cards as weight, as they decided we need those to make more springs. Finally I comprimised and we gave up the idea of using weights which I finally proved was a bad idea. On the drop day, we finished the final construction of the container by putting the egg in and making it a nice lid. We made a mistake here. We should have used tapes to keep egg away from the bottom of the box which would be very helpful, but instead we simply put the egg on the bottom of container. Our guys worked very hard for the project. we really enjoy it and love it. I felt I did not contributed enough to the group. I did not do the construction which Alisha was working hard on. I simply gave my suggestions and idea. I would do better next time. I was not too much disappointed of our container but I was very surprised at the "parachute" of Megan's group who did an amazing job. There are a lot of things that I need to learn from them. Hope them good luck tomorrow!

Above is from the evaluation for the egg container.

    QB Tournament

    Hi,

We had the Great Lake League Quiz Bowl Tournament today in Bowling Green. We got Thomas Dever, Chris, Greg and me as a full team today. We did pretty good as we beat Bowling Green for the first time, and finished 6-1 tied with Findlay and Bowling Green.  Findlay beat us and lost to BG. Finally by the calculation of small points we ranked third and just missed the chance to get into the State Final. We had a pretty good game against Bowling Green today and I scored career high 9 points which led us to 20 to 16 victory against BG. BG had an incredible chinese guy who used to get every maths question, but today I crashed him by answering correctly every quick maths question in advance of him. He finished being scoreless in the game. We finally received 2 trophies (both 3rd place) from Lake League. This will be the end of the games in this league. I had a great time and learned a lot.

By the way, I read the news and was surprised to find out that Toledo OH was finally ranked 1st in US in the competition of most livable city, and ranked 3rd in the whole world after 2 cities in Denmark and France. Toledo has great environment without industry or pollution, near by Great Lake, extremely cheap living condition, few crimes, non-crowded traffic. Although Toledo is a clean place, it is still hard for me to believe that it is the most livable city in the United States.

Yesterday's basketball was pretty good and I practiced very hard.

    Eggs Containers!

    Hi

Everything is just fine. We had a physics project of protecting eggs from cracking when dropped. We had been working on these for a week. Our egg survived 2.5 meters which finally ranked second among the 5 groups. I put spring made by paper underneath which did work just fine. The container from Megan and Abby's group was incredible. Theirs already survived 7 meters and is going to even climb higher. They got extremely brilliant idea of adding parachute. Hope they good luck tomorrow. I am going basketball today. CU!

    Thrillers

    Hi,

I found thrillers really good and I preferred to watching thrillers in my spare time than doing other things. Some scenes in thriller are disgusting or too scary. I watched Black Water about the crocodile, Somebody Help Me about a cruel doctor. I am trying to discover some more thrillers without too many blood scene. I would prefer if I could go to the Chinese kid today, but I need Carol's permmision to take me. Not much I can do. I just recieved the bill charging me 150 bucks for my insurence which I do not appreciate at all. Now I have 26 hrs driving record(with 5 hrs night record) in my first month with my license. I need 50hrs in total(with 10 hrs night) to get  to the test in 6 months. I will achieve that easily.

Happy thanksgiving.  I just remembered you may not have enough money in your bank account to buy the tickets.  Please let me know if you need me to help.

    wanke :

    Alos,

    8:11 Zhou :

    Happy Thanksgiving

    8:11 Zhou :

Do not worry about that. have just about enough money for the tickets

    wanke :

Please ask Phil and Carol to apply for Chinese Visa soon.  Here is the information http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/hzqz/zgqz/t84246.htm

    8:11 Zhou :

    alright

    8:11 Zhou :

    they are working on that

    wanke :

They need to go to New York Consulate to get the visa or do it through a traval agent so they do not have to be phisically there. http://www.nyconsulate.prchina.org/eng/

    8:11 Zhou :

Oh, I don't know it is that complicated. I thought that we just need to fill in a application form online and send it to dc with their passport. The embassy will send it back within a week

    8:11 Zhou :

I will find out the procedure and start it today

    wanke :

If you read the first link I just sent you, it states that mail application is not accepted.  To be sure, have them call the Consulate on Monday to corfirm.

    8:11 Zhou :

    ok

    wanke :

Your Mom told me Carol's opinion on going to a private high school.  I think she is right about some private high school, not all of them.  There are ones that have high admission standard and first-class programs.  My suggestion is to proceed with your TOEFL and SSAT tests and applications.  When admitted, you can visist the schools and decide if you would like to attend any one of them or stay

    wanke :

    at your current school.

    8:11 Zhou :

alright, I have already applied for ssat

    8:11 Zhou :

I have not decided yet when to take toefl

    wanke :

I see.  Please arrange your test date to meet the application deadline of the schools you plan to apply to.  Given your outstanding grades, I do not know if you need to repeat Junior year again.  When you talk with the Lake Forest school admission officer, ask him about that.  Also aks him if a summer program at the school would help you getting into a good college without repeating Junior year.

    8:11 Zhou :

Good idea, because I also don't think that repeating Junior year is not that nesseasriy for me

    8:11 Zhou 说:

I will ask Mr Gerber about it the summer program

    wanke :

If you do plan to not repeating Junior year, you need to have a very good SAT or ACT score to get in a good college.  The last test you can take is in March or April next year.  You need to prepare for the tests now.  Applications starts in September.  Many students start the process in the summer next year, filling out application forms, getting teacher recommendations, writing required assays.

    wanke :

On average, a student apply for 5-6 colleges, some apply to as many as 30.  Each school may have different forms and assay to write.  It is a long and laboring process.  Some colleges have early addmission that is decided in November next year.  By February 2009, all results should be out.  You Senoir year grades wouldn't be seen by the college addmision offiers until decisions have been made.

    8:11 Zhou 说:

I see. I am planning on taking the ACT early next year together with most of the classmates

The reading part tend to be the most difficult one.  Yaya has problem with it also.  You just need to work on it.  You probably also need to try to remember all the vocabulary.  I do not remember if we got you a word list. If not you can get one at a bookstore and start to remember them.

    8:11 Zhou :

    I have a word list

    wanke :

To get into a good college, you will need to get at least a 32 out of 36 on ACT

    8:11 Zhou :

By the way, I used up my phone card. How can I get it

    8:11 Zhou :

    I see

    wanke :

I will get one for you next week.  Will that be soon enough?

    8:11 Zhou :

I think I can get one myself

    8:11 Zhou :

    Maybe online purchase

    8:11 Zhou :

No worries, I still have avout 30 minutes to use

    wanke :

We use an online site called OneSuite. I will send you the link

    8:11 Zhou :

    Thanks

    Carol's back

    HI,

Carol will be back today at 10. Phil alone is going to pick her up at the Metro Airport in Detroit, as I am about to go to play a basketball game at 9. Then Mike is going to take me home from the game. No injuries! Phil and I just came home from chess game in which we defeated St Francis with a score of 4 to 0. I won with black today on third board with a new rating of 1332 top 26 in the whole high school league in Toledo. Now I am ranked the third in Central team, with a perfectly 5 to 0 on boards. Ryan is 1597 now and Greg is 1376. Dan is 1326 and Tom is 1312. I could get much better. My game was not so flat, as my opponent played d4 opening which I am really bad at. I will have learn it better. Hope I could have a good game in Basketball tonight.

    Thanksgiving week

    Hi,

Today was the Open house day for Central Catholic HS, and I went there to help. We are in the Thanksgiving week now which means that we only have 2 days to go for the entire week. I am going to have a basketball game tomorrow at the same time Carol will be coming home so I am not able to pick her up at the arport tomorrow.

We had a problem that the dogs kept getting out of the fence and we finally figured out that the fence was broken. So Phil and I fixed it this afternoon. We are out of groceries at home and phil is too busy to go out today. Thanks god that Carol is coming home. I am having an easy week and during Thanksgiving I have to work very hard searching for school and taking interviews.

    Everything will be just fine!

    Trip to Ann Arbor MI

    Hi,

Phil and I went up to Ann Arbor Michigan to meet his friends Gim and Raine. They live in Lansing MI, an hour north of Ann Arbor, and we live in Toledo OH, 1 hour south. They were really very nice people and invited us to come during Thanksgiving. We went to a fancy restaurant which was extremely crowded due to the Michigan vs OH States football game. Approximtely 111000 people went to the game taken place in University of Mihigan Ann Arbor Michigan.111000 is almost half the population of the whole city of Ann Arbor. Some people in Ann Arbor rent their lawn as parking places for the game for 20 bucks which was funny. We did not meet Danny because we could not get him . Phil tried to call him email him send him voice message or text message, but Danny never replied. Hopefully we will meet him during thansgiving.

Unfortunately, before we leave for Ann Arbor, we lost both dogs. Someone did released them from our gate. Phil and I drove and looked for the dogs. We found Carnie on Cherry Street after we gave and and prepared to go to the dinner. Alice was found 10 miles from Birckhead in 1 o clock in the morning today by 2 policemen. They picked her up and sent her home. Thanks god we found them or Carol would be so sad. Tomorrow will be open house for Central Catholic. Yeah!

    Chess

    Hi,

As I said, I am playing lots of chess. I won the game today (my 8th consecutive win in official chess games) and my ratings rises up to 1310( start from 1200). Although I am still playing 4th board, as Ryan is 1544 now, Dan is 1326 and Greg is 1364, I am feeling good and I almost catch up with them. We have Tom as our fifth board with 1290,which in even higher than the rating of first board Start player. And we beat Start with 3:1 today, and also won the fifth board, although only first 4 boards game results are taken into account of the matches. Hopefully I will pass Dan and Greg pretty soon and become 2nd Board player, but it is not possible to pass our City Best Player Ryan. My game was not as hard as the one yesterday. I took his knight for free first, then he trapped my rook and traded the rook with his knights. Then after some trade offs, I had 1 rook both knights and all 8 good position pawn vs his two rooks with 6 bad position pawns and finally I won the game.

I am going to Ann Arber Mi tomorrow, Yeah

    Too much to do

    Hi,

I just come home from a chess match. We beat Ottawa Hill today 3:1. I won my game with black. I was playing an defensive game and I almost ran out of time. That was a hard game, but fortunately I was the winner. Greg lost, while Ryan and Dan both won.

On yesterday's Quiz Bowl, we got 4 games in a row with a 25 to 23 against TSA final score by me. Everything goes well. I am taking lots of tests this week. I finished religion test today, and have math and physics to do tomorrow.

With some volleyball game photos, taken in Nutter Center Wright State University in Dayton Ohio. V R OH CHAMPS! We had a fancy pep rally today to celebrate and honor our volleyball team.

I am doing some comic Hamlet books during Brit lit and I had a lot of fun. I am not having fun with Spanish since it is really too much of work. I am going up to Michigan to visit his friends during this weekends. Hopefully I will have fun.

    Enjoy!

    Some mistyping mistakes.
    Cities name(correct):

    V R OH CHAMPS!

    Hi,

    累了两天,终于我们的了州冠军.我在这两天也攒了11小时开车记录,还是挺爽的。周五的那场比赛相当艰苦。我们先输两局,后来连下三城,We eventually,beat them.

Yesterday's game was brilliant, as we swept a catholic girl high school. Ashley is our best and favorite player. She is very good as she averaged 18 hits and 8 blocks per matches. Ashley is at least 6'2". Everybody is proud of volleyball girls. This game is the end of all fall sports games, as winter is coming.

I lost my way on Friday as I almost drove to Columbus, Capital of ohio. I drove on 675 towards Colombus instead of I 75. Then I found it out and took I 70 back. There was road construction on I70 and the exit towards I75 back to Toledo was blocked, so we have to go another 50 miles and get into Indiana approaching Indianappolis. OOPs! That delayed me at least 2 hrs to get home. Yesterday, I took the right way as I was going on 675 towards Cincinatti, we got to cincinatti and took the I 75 back home. Loang hrs driving was really tiring. I took 2 rests from Cincinatti back home. I took a rest in Lima as we need gasoline, and took dinner in a truck station near Bowling Green. How exciting a trip was! This weekend is not ended as we still have Sunday and Monday off.

    See ya

    Trip to Dayton

    Hi,
